The CEO of United Pacific Industries, which currently exports to 18 countries, has spoken of the advantages of continuing to make its Thermoskin product in Australia.

Thermoskin is the SME’s main product. It was released in 1985 and is used to assist recovery from sporting and other injuries. Nearly half of all of Thermoskin’s heat bracing aids are made and warehoused in Kilsyth, in Melbourne’s east.

The company’s board re-committed to keeping the creation of its products in Australia last month.

In an interview with Smart Company, CEO Mat Symingtonsaid that it was useful to continue to manufacture in Australia for a number ofreasons, these included quickness of responses to clients’ needs, reduced timeto market, closeness to researchers at Victoria University (with which UPI hasa relationship.

“Another value-add about local manufacturing is it means we can offer our customers custom-make services. Not everyone fits into a small, medium or large,” Symington told Smart Company.

We do have sizing guidelines for our products, but for specific fits – especially for knee injuries and the like – we can have someone call up and say, ‘I have quite a large calf, so I need an adjustment there’, and we can make it for them. And that’s used quite frequently.”

Symingtonadded that though the company’s accounts were of course important, retainingand rewarding loyal employees – some of whom had been with the company for twodecades – was important.

“We want to provide an environment where they can flourish,” he said. “As I said,we’ve got a lot of long-term staff, and I hope that’s because of the culture we have.”
