New Zealand’s Solid Energy has imported Australian Dan Clifford, from GlencoreXstrata, to head the state owned miner.

This new appoint comes around a year after its head Don Elder left, according to Stuff.co.nz.

Clifford was previously the general manager at Ulan, in New South Wales, and has spent more than two decades working coal mining around the globe.

He has also worked for Anglo American and BHP.

Acting Sold Energy chair Pip Dunphy welcomed Clifford aboard, stating that “Dan has successfully restructured mining operations to be more efficient and economic ,and leaves behind at Ulan a significantly improved health and safety performance across that operation, which produces 11 million tonnes of coal a year with a work force of about 900 people."

He steps into the role officially in May, later this year.

His appointment comes only days after the New Zealand miner posted a NZ$ 41 million loss for the half year to 31 December 2013.
