One worker has been killed and another seriously injured at Fortescue’s Christmas Creek mine.
The incident occurred at the operation’s surface mining work shop late last year.
According to a source familiar with the event the two workers were injured in a crush incident.
One was killed whilst the other was airlifted from the site.
Fortescue has released a statement confirming the accident, which caused the death of the 23 year old worker.
"The man and a workmate were undertaking maintenance work on a surface miner when the accident occurred," the company said in a statement.
"The man's workmate sustained leg injuries in the incident."
Surface operations have been temporarily suspended.
This was the third fatality in the industry in a month, and second fatality on the Fortescue mine in the last six months, following a contractor being crushed in August with another worker seriously injured in October last year.
