TOYOTA has installed a 500kW solar photovoltaic system on the roof of its manufacturing plant in Altona.
Autonomous Energy installed the 2000 panel system of Kyocera Solar panels on the site. Part of the funding was provided by the Clean Technology Investment Program (now discontinued).
The solar modules will produce around 668,460-kilowatt hours of renewable energy a year, helping Toyota offset 882.4t of carbon dioxide a year.
This output provides around 10 percent of the Altona factory's energy needs, with ROI within 4 years. However, the plant will close in 2017, before full ROI has been achieved.
By reducing energy expenses, manufacturers can produce goods at a lower cost and thus be more competitive.
According to Kyocera, large scale installations can not only help the environment, but also benefit the bottom line.
