With injuries resulting from vehicle accidents a serious issue on site, the need for safer hydraulic brakes is rising.
Advanced Braking Technology (ABT) have developed new hydraulic wet braking system which not only prevent vehicle runaways and aid stopping, but are also up to the challenging demands of the mine site environment.
The new brakes, known as the sealed integrated braking system (SIBS) are an Australian development that is a fully enclosed, single rotor, high speed hydraulic wet brake.
According to ABT, as the SIBS brakes are fully enclosed they are no longer exposed to environmental contaminants typically found on site such as dust, water and mud, which can't penetrate the brakes, resulting in brake failure and threatening safety of workers on site down the line.
The hydraulic brakes also suffer from minimal wear due to their lower operating temperatures as the brake rotors run in a bath of oil that cools the brake during operation.
"An innovative fail safe feature of the brake is the spring applied hydraulic release park brake system functioning as an integrated park and emergency brake," the company stated.
This ensures that the vehicle can not roll away unexpectedly or undergo any uncontrolled vehicle movements.
"This feature provides an unprecedented level of safety of vehicle operators and site personnel."
Advanced Braking Technology stated that the SIBS brakes can be easily adapted to any make of light vehicle, while the SIBS Driveline Brakes for heavy vehicles protects the larger sized machines.
Martin Johnston, general manager for ABT's mining division, said the brakes have been stringently tested and validated.
"SIBS brakes are designed and certified to exacting ADR requirements, and consistently outlast the vehicles they are fitted to, unlike conventional drum and disc brakes," Johnston said.
