Don’t let thieves ruin your special day


Planning a wedding is without doubt the most exciting time in a couple's life, however, amidst all the excitement there is a tendency to slack on 'security' issues.

A couple's wedding day and honeymoon period can be a popular target for opportunists and thieves seeking valuables such as money, cash, household items and jewellery.

"The community is often aware when a particular household is having a wedding. And unfortunately, both on the big day, and afterwards during the honeymoon, thieves can rightly assume that the house contains valuable items such as wedding gifts from guests or perhaps cash for the upcoming honeymoon", commented David Such, Regional Manager from ADT , the world's largest electronic security company.

"A vacant house becomes an easy target, and with some burglars even scanning newspapers for wedding announcements, you can never be too cautious. We encourage newlyweds to be especially careful and security conscious at this time to ensure the happiest day of their lives goes off without a hitch", added David.

Simple security measures such as letting your neighbours know your movements and contact numbers, or arranging a trustworthy friend to monitor the premises can help ensure your wedding day is perfect and provide peace of mind throughout your honeymoon period.

With over 100's years worth of experience, ADT has a few tips to help ensure your home is as secure as possible on your special day.

* Install an alarm system to give yourself peace of mind when your premises are unoccupied

* Purchase a security system that is clearly visible when installed

* Consider having your alarm system monitored by a security company so that when your alarm is triggered, you will be notified instantly

* Don't leave wedding gifts on view near a window

* Keep gardens trimmed so that they do not offer camouflage for burglars

* Don't leave spare keys in obvious places

* Keep doors, windows and pathways well lit at night

* Lock side gates

* Lock your meter box to prevent tampering with your home's power supply

* Padlock garden sheds and garages

* Put away garden tools and ensure ladders and wheelie bins are locked and secured to ensure they cannot be used to enter your home

* Secure all windows with locks or security grills and not just when you leave the house
