‘Booster’ amplifier saves board space

APEX Microtechnology's new PB51 is a power ‘booster’ amplifier designed to work in tandem with small signal, general-purpose op amps to generate voltage and current gains.

By placing the PB51 in the feedback loop of the driver amplifier, a composite amplifier is created with the accuracy of the driver and the extended output voltage range and current capability of the booster.

The PB51 features 1.5A continuous output current, and an ‘A Grade’ version - the PB51 A - provides 2A of output.

A very wide supply range of ±l.5V to ±150V makes the PB51/PB51A suitable for a number of high voltage applications including electrostatic transducers, electrostatic deflection, programmable power supplies operating up to 280V p-p, and high voltage instrumentation, such as waveform generators.

Packaging for the PB51/PB51A is a space-saving, electrically isolated 12-pin PowerSIP. Board space requirements measure roughly one-inch square thanks to the PowerSIP's 1.2" footprint. The package's flat back design and isolated case allows for the direct heat sinking.

Other key performance features for these new power boosters include a 50V/μs slew rate (75V/μs for the PB51A), programmable output current limit, high power bandwidth of 320kHz minimum and a low 12mA of quiescent current.

An evaluation kit - The EK29 - is available for easy prototyping. K D Fisher 08 8277 3288.
