Surfs up for RFID

RADIO Frequency Identification (RFID) - a technology that involves small, cheap electronic tags, wireless RFID readers and related infrastructure is one of the most rapidly growing markets in today’s automatic data collection industry, according to Peacock Bros MD, Neil Crump.

“The technology promises to revolutionise supply chains and usher in a new era of cost savings, efficiencies and business intelligence. So much so, that even Microsoft has recently unveiled plans to introduce RFID technology into commercial-release software,” Crump told Food Magazine.

“Industry experts view RFID as a complement to bar code technology, but RFID technology can overcome certain limitations found in some bar code applications because, unlike bar coding that is an optical technology - no inherent line of sight is required between the reader and the tagged RFID object.”
